The article “Carpet-Cleaning Tips” written by the Editors of Consumer Guide tell us how it’s done:

“Vacuuming is where most people start when maintaining their carpeting. That, then, is where we’ll start this article on carpet-cleaning tips. But it isn’t where the article will end. We’ll present all sorts of guidelines for cleaning, removing stains, and dealing with various other problems.

For now, though, we’ll get to the basics:

Carpets need to be vacuumed once a week and more often in areas of heavy traffic. Frequent vacuuming prolongs the life of your carpet by preventing a buildup of gritty particles that can cut carpet fibers. Every few weeks, take a little extra time and use your crevice tool for cleaning around baseboards and radiators and in other hard-to-reach places.
To vacuum wall-to-wall carpeting, divide the floor into quadrants and vacuum an entire quadrant before moving on to the next.
Take your time when you vacuum a carpet, especially a plush carpet in which dirt is sure to be deeply embedded. One pass with a high-powered upright is not enough. Go over each section of carpeting several times, and work slowly to allow the suction to remove all the ground-in dust and dirt.
Pay special attention to the areas where people sit and move their feet. Vacuum these areas of heavy traffic with a crisscross pattern of overlapping strokes.
Soil retardants can be applied to new carpets or to newly cleaned carpets. Follow manufacturers’ advice. Apply soil retardants only with professional equipment using the recommended application techniques.
Add baking soda to the bag in your vacuum to fight odors.

Odors are one thing — spots and spills are quite another. Spots and spills happen to just about every carpet and can be difficult to remove. In the next section, we’ll offer some pointers for getting rid of those blemishes.”

How to Unclog a Drain

First and foremost…DO NOT pour oils, grease or fats down the drain! This is a surefire way to block a drain quickly and securely. Oils cling to the sides of the pipes and collect debris which can build up very fast to become a steadfast clog. They should be poured into a container and placed in the trash.

A strainer will help prevent clogged drains by keeping hair, food and other items from building up in the drain. First try a plunger; this often works better and faster than most chemicals. If that doesn’t work, try a combination of these following steps:

1/2 cup of baking soda, followed by 1/2 cup of white vinegar.
Then cover the drain if you can, and allow the foaming pressure to evacuate the clog.
Other recipes call for 1/2 cup of salt and an equal amount of baking soda, followed by 6 cups of boiling water.
Wait for at least an hour, then right after flush with cold water.
As a last resort, get a plumber’s snake and follow the directions.

American Carpet Cleaning can remove any spot that is not a permanent stain. But there are conditions that permanent stains present. Through our professional carpet cleaning work and professional cleaning studies, we list the following conditions and there difficulty with a % of chance of removal.

Yellowing (50%) – Yellowing can be as simple as neutralizing the spot or area by spraying solution on it, or it can be impossible to remove. There are many unknown causes for yellowing. It is so common that we have 5 different products on our truck just for yellowing.
Blood (75%) – If blood has not been cleaned, if hot water or alkaline cleaning products have not been used, chances are good, but no guarantee.
Rust (85%) – Chances for rust removal are excellent, but no guarantee.
Furniture Stain (10%) – Almost impossible. (Bonded insert)
Coke (95%) – Usually not a problem.
Coffee (70%) – We usually have a fair amount of success although coffee, many times, is spilled when it’s very hot which can make it more difficult.
Mustard (15%) – Can be very difficult at times. Not always impossible, but many times it is.
Paint (latex) (75%) – Usually good results. Colored latex can permanently stain the carpet. Hardened latex can be impossible.
Crayon (50%) – We carry some excellent solvents, but it can go either way.
